AI Search Optimization for Small Businesses
More people now ask an AI tool for a local recommendation before they search the old way. A BrightLocal survey in 2026 found that 45 percent of consumers use ChatGPT-style tools for local recommendations, up from 6 percent a year earlier. Whether you like that or not, a question such as "who does tree trimming in Logan" now gets a written answer with a few businesses in it. AI search optimization is the work of making sure yours is one of them, and that the details in the answer are right.
KORB Digital is a full digital services studio based in Logan, Utah, working with businesses across Utah and beyond. We started working on this for local businesses because we saw what the answers were made from, and most of it was fixable.
What AI search optimization is
Search has three AI surfaces that matter for a local business today:
- Google AI Overviews appear above the results for many questions.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini answer in conversation and lean heavily on Google Maps data.
- ChatGPT and Perplexity answer from the pages they search and the sites they trust.
You will also see the terms GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization). They mean the same thing as the heading above. We use plain language on this page because the job is plain: be easy to find, be clear about what you do, and be mentioned by sources that other people trust.

What the research says, and what it does not
We read the studies and Google's own guidance before selling anything, and the findings are less dramatic than most agency pages suggest.
- Google published a guide to AI search in 2026. It says AI features use the same index and ranking as regular Search, that no special markup is needed, and that llms.txt is ignored. It also warns against creating a separate page for every variation of a question, which it treats as scaled content spam.
- BrightLocal analyzed about 61,000 checks across Google's AI tools and ChatGPT. For Google's AI, the Business Profile was the biggest single source for local details. Yelp was second for Google and first for ChatGPT. Facebook, the Better Business Bureau and home-service directories showed up often. About 93 percent of the cited domains were the businesses' own websites.
- A study of 1.4 million prompts found that the pages ChatGPT cites tend to be pages that already rank well.
- Studies found no real lift in AI citations from adding schema markup or llms.txt.
- Research on 2,961 runs of the same questions found that the list of businesses named changes from run to run, so a single screenshot proves very little.
The practical conclusion: AI visibility sits on top of ordinary local SEO, plus the other sites AI tools read, plus honest measurement. It is not a trick, and we do not sell it as one.
What is included
1. A check of what AI says about you now
We write the questions your customers would ask, such as "best drywall repair in Logan Utah" or "who builds websites for small businesses in Cache Valley." We run each in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, five times each, and record how often you are named, how you are described, and which sites the answer cites. That is your baseline.
2. Your Google Business Profile
For Google's AI, the profile is the source. We saw this ourselves on a landscaping client in Logan. When we asked Google AI Mode who does tree trimming and garden care in Logan, it named five businesses and described each from its profile's "From the business" text. A competitor with the same rating, the same category and a full description was picked. Our client, whose description was one line, was not. We rewrote the description in the owner's own plain words, named every service, and kept it short. One search proves little, and AI answers vary, but the lesson is cheap to act on. See Google Business Profile optimization.
3. A website AI tools can read
Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. A page that needs scripts to show its words can look blank to them. We check what a crawler actually receives and fix pages that hide their text. Then we make sure the first 100 words of each service page answer the question directly, with the town, the service and the plain facts a customer needs: what the job is, who it is for, what it costs to start, what happens next. Pages that answer the question first are easier for people and for machines to use.
We also confirm you have not blocked AI bots by accident in robots.txt or at your host.
4. The other sites AI reads
ChatGPT leans on directories and review sites more than on Google. We claim and clean up the ones that fit your business, such as Yelp, Facebook, Bing Places, the Better Business Bureau and trade directories like Angi or Houzz for home services. Your name, phone number and services must match everywhere. For home-based businesses we skip any listing that would publish your street address.
5. Real mentions
AI tools favor businesses that other sources mention. That means local news, the chamber of commerce, trade groups, supplier pages and real "best of" lists in your area. We help you earn these through useful local content and direct outreach. We do not publish self-made listicles. Research shows they can get a business into an AI answer briefly, and then the mention disappears.
6. Reviews
Rating works as a gate. ChatGPT recommended only about one percent of 350,000 chain locations in one study, and those averaged 4.3 stars. We set up a way to text a review link after each job, reply to every review, and send some requests to Yelp or Facebook so you are not depending on one site. A plain reviews page on your own website, showing recent reviews of all ratings, has been cited by ChatGPT and Gemini in practitioner reports within days.
7. Monthly measurement
Each month we rerun your question set five times per question and report "named in 3 of 5." We also look at AI referrals in your analytics and at brand searches in Search Console. Many AI visits arrive as direct traffic, and one practitioner estimates ChatGPT sends about 2 percent of what Google sends to a small-business site, so we do not oversell the traffic. The goal is to be named, described correctly, and contacted.
What we do not do
We do not sell llms.txt, chunked content, or schema as AI levers. We do not create dozens of near-duplicate pages for every way someone might phrase a question. We do not hide instructions for AI in your pages. Google's spam policies now cover manipulating AI answers, and a competitor can report you.
Timeline and expectations
Profile and website fixes can change what Google's AI says in weeks. Mentions on other sites and a steady flow of reviews take months. Because AI answers vary from run to run, you will see "named 2 of 5 runs" become "4 of 5" slowly, with no clean jump. Our guideline is the same as for any SEO: expect four months to a year before the results look settled, and judge the work by the calls and leads it brings, not by one screenshot.
What it costs
Local SEO and AI search visibility is part of our Scale plan (see the plans). Every plan includes a free launch site with GEO and AI-search basics: titles, accurate structured data and a Search Console setup. If you want a one-time project, such as a baseline report and a cleanup of your profile, listings and key pages, the statement of work (SOW) we write after the free review confirms the scope and price.
Where we work
We are based in Logan and know the Cache Valley market, where competition for most services is lighter than along the Wasatch Front. The work is remote, so we serve clients anywhere in the United States.

Questions people ask
It is the work of making your business easy for AI tools to find, understand and name correctly when someone asks a question like "who fixes drywall in Logan." It covers your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews and the other sites AI tools read.
Mostly it is the same work. Google says AI answers use Search's own index and ranking, so a page that ranks well and answers the question clearly is the starting point. The extra parts are your listings on other sites and checking what the tools actually say.
No. AI answers change from one run to the next, and research found that two runs rarely give the exact same list of businesses. We measure how often you are named across several runs and work to raise that rate.
Google says it ignores llms.txt, and large studies found no measurable lift in AI citations from it or from adding schema markup. We still add accurate structured data, because it helps Google's regular results and keeps your details correct. We do not sell it as an AI trick.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Perplexity when your customers use it. Each reads different sources, so we check them separately.
Each month we run your key questions five times each and report how many times you were named. You also see AI referrals in your analytics, though many show up as direct visits, so we read them alongside your brand searches and calls.
Never. Self-made listicles and review tricks get a business flagged or ignored, and the FTC bans fake reviews. We work on real reviews, real listings and real local mentions.
